When leaders implement training that elicits positive emotions with their people, workplace understanding and compassion grow resulting in increased morale and a “can do” attitude in everyone. Training that inadvertently threatens or stirs up negative emotions, leads to burnout, fear, worry, lost productivity and ultimately…to disaster.
The best training programs focus on people working in sync with each other’s thoughts, values and actions. This requires trainers to have high levels of emotional intelligence, including the competencies of social awareness, self-awareness, self-management, and relationship management. Training should inspire people through mindfulness, hope, and compassion. Mindfulness seeks to have you and your people live in full consciousness of themselves, others, nature, and society. In today’s world of ever growing uncertainty, hope inspires and uplifts by giving clarity of vision, optimism, and a profound belief in the ability to turn dreams into reality. Mindfulness and hope, when presented in the context of compassion for people, provides an unstoppable trio. The trainers’ primary challenge is to ignite people’s passion and mobilize the resources of the organization towards a bright future. People are literally “wired” to pick up subtle clues from one another and, in a sense, dependent on one another for their emotions. We gauge our emotional responses on the feelings of the people around us. At the same time, a trainers emotions convey their true feelings regardless of how positive the training message being delivered. When a leader is impatient, frustrated, or fearful of failure, everyone who works with them begins to feel exactly the same way. This is the beginning of a negative environment and can be overcome thru mindfulness, hope and compassion. Mindfulness is the capacity to be fully aware of all that you experience inside yourself, including your body, mind, heart, and spirit. It is also the capacity to pay full attention to what is happening around you, including people, the natural world, your surroundings, and events. Mindfulness helps you to counter negative effects and it is a first critical step in renewal. Awareness of yourself enables you to notice the detrimental effects and involves the “three A’s” of being awake, aware, and attending. Mindfulness takes confidence and optimism to make the right choices about how to respond to people and situations and strengthens your insights and wisdom. Mindfulness demands you seize opportunities to gain information about people, groups, and cultures. Sharpening your skills at information-gathering will let you see details you may otherwise have missed. How do you creat and instill hope? It is a combination of clearly stated goals, a belief that you can obtain them, mapping a course of action, taking action and achieving the goal while experiencing a sense of well-being as a result. When hope is experienced, people feel elated about the future, enjoy positive emotions that boost their ability to reason, have better interactions with other people, and increase their overall performance. The key to instilling hope is to develop a vision, reflecting your deepest beliefs and values, creating a desired image for the future. In order to inspire others with your vision, you have to articulate it compellingly. To be inspirational, your vision must be anchored in the reality you and others face. It’s essential for trainers and their followers to have strong beliefs about what the future holds because there’s abundant evidence showing that what people believe will happen…usually does. Compassion allows you to understand the needs and dreams of those around you and, like hope, compassion is contagious. Compassion begins with understanding others and respecting their perceptions of reality. It’s relatively easy to feel compassion for people who are like us. It’s more difficult, but probably more important, to feel compassion for those who are unlike us. Compassion is essential for building a strong team and getting everyone to pull together. To avoid burnout and reduce what seems to be ever increasing levels of fear and uncertainty in our rapidly and constantly changing workplace, develop a compelling vision of the future and communicate it with continual training that always focuses on mindfulness, hope and compassion. |
